Pink, Rose, Red, Brown, Short, Long… just vague descriptions of what my hair has looked like since the birth of Adventure á la Mode. Now, I admit, the things I do to my hair and the drastic changes I make to myself (and as quickly as I do them) I would never do to a client. It’s just fun to break the “rules” every once in a while.
But how do I go from short to long so quickly? I can tell you it isn’t a supplement I am taking and it definitely isn’t some crazy baking-soda-coconut-oil concoction that I just stumbled upon on Pinterest. I am not that patient so I buy my hair. Yup, you heard me correctly… I exchange money for hair– a weave if you will. Its fun though! I get to be short and sassy one day and long and sexy the next. C’mon, even Timmy loves coming home to a new woman every few weeks. 😉 Now, you may be wondering “what kind of extensions,” “how long do they last,” or my favorite, “you can style them like your own hair?” Ha! How did I know that’s what you were thinking?– It’s like I have ESPN or something (if you didn’t get that Mean Girls quote then we can no longer be friends).
Well first off, every hairstylist has their own opinion on what types of hair extensions they prefer. Personally, I am a fan of two different types– tape-ins and clip-ins. Both are very different and have different purposes! Currently, I am sporting the tape-in extensions. My natural hair is too short right now to really wear the clip-ins comfortably. I also like the convenience of having the extensions in my hair every day and being able to wear braids and ponies. I have also rocked clip-in extensions in the past– mainly for body and a little extra length. Both types (as long as they are 100% human hair) can be shampooed, conditioned, dried, curled and flat-ironed just like your natural hair. They respond just like your hair to humidity and chemical changes; they are in fact real human hair. Where does the hair come from? Well honestly and truly, I must admit I am rocking hair that was sacrificed to someone’s god. Cruel? Maybe, but they weren’t using it anymore, so it’s fair game. Haha!
Extensions come in a variety of length, color, and styles. Though not recommended, you can also color the extensions to match your hair; I am guilty of this. When I go to purchase my extensions there is a brand that always sticks out to me — Bellami Hair Extensions. They are pricey, but the quality of the hair is phenomenal. When looking for hair extensions, one word should stick out– Remy. Remy is the way the hair is placed on the weft; in this case, the cuticle is facing the same direction as natural hair– down– thus causing the least amount of frizz. When the hair isn’t Remy hair, the cuticle can be pointing in different directions causing a lot of frizz and dullness in the color. Bellami Hair extensions focus on these qualities and provide smooth, shiny hair. Extensions come in an array of color and lengths. The longer the hair or the more intense the color, the more expensive they can be. I am a huge fan of Guy Tang’s work. He is phenomenal at color melting and blending and he also has a line of hair extensions through Bellami Hair. Now, I have not purchased these for my personal use, but a co-worker of mine rocks them and they look so good! This is definitely a good quality brand of hair extension if you’re in the market!
Be warned.. I may not have the same hair style by the time we write our next blog post… but then again, its hard to tell with me!

P.S. If you are interested in learning more about where hair extensions come from and you enjoy comedies, you must watch Good Hair starring Chris Rock! There is a lot about ethnic hair and hair extensions– and tons of laughter. You don’t have to be a hair dresser to enjoy this film! Oh, and one more thing, we’re doing a giveaway to celebrate 5 months with awesome beauty products. Make sure you enter. Contest ends soon!
