In the salon, we see a lot. Green hair in natural blondes, dandruff, and head lice. DUN DUN DUNNNNN. Before I start this post let me begin by saying I am not a doctor; the advice that I am giving you should never overrule what your doctor says.
Let’s begin, class.
It’s at the tail end of summer. Your little ones have been swimming all summer long and their hair feels like cement; it may even have a little bit of a green tint to it. Have no fear! There are tons of ways to get rid of that “swimmers hair” without cutting it! The first product is by Paul Mitchell called Shampoo Three (Item #1). This is a really good product for getting rid of the chlorine feeling in the hair. When using this product you want to be aware that it is removing the impurities from the hair. I recommend doing a deep conditioner on the hair after using this. Ashley talks about one of our favorite deep conditioners in her last post! By removing the impurities, you are also removing natural oils as well, so you immediately want to restore them. This shampoo will usually remove some/most of the green cast as well. If your child has really green hair from chlorine I would recommend calling your salon and asking for a treatment (side note: this shampoo works wonders for those of you who have well water). Another product that I love is Swimmers Shampoo by Ion (Item #2). This product is great to use every time your child gets out of a swimming pool– especially the high chlorinated pools for those on the swim team. You can usually find this product at your local Sally Beauty Supply store. Again, I highly recommend a deep conditioner after use.
Suffering from dandruff? While your medicated shampoo is great (Selsum, Head & Shoulders, etc.), it could be really harsh on your ends. Not to mention, if you use them daily, they could stop working. Why is that? Well it’s medicine. We don’t take Tylenol or Excedrin when we don’t need it because it wouldn’t work as effectively when we do. Besides, its good to switch up your shampoo routine. My suggestion: Use your medicated shampoo 2-3 times a week and on the other days, use a Tea Tree Shampoo (Item #3). I would also go as far as using a Tea Tree conditioner daily, as well. Tea Tree has a cool mint feeling, if you are not familiar with it, and the smell is excellent for men of all ages (especially the boys who are now to old to kiss their moms in public 😉 ). Oh, and Tea Tree has also been known to help Psoriasis flare-ups! Make sure your child has completely rinsed their hair; traces of shampoo and conditioner can cause flaking and drying of the scalp!
Mum’s the word for this next topic. Head lice. While I can’t recommend anything for treating head lice, I can give you some suggestions for head lice prevention. One interesting fact is, lice can not jump from one child’s head to another. Lice can only transmit through contact. Teach your children not to share brushes, hats, and scarves, which I am sure most of you already do. To prevent head lice, Tea Tree Shampoo can be what saves you. You can also add Tea Tree oil into your child’s daily shampoo. For some reason those little guys hate that oil, so it’s a great trick! Another thing lice hates? Dirty hair. Now, I am not going to tell you to take your kids out back and turn them into Pig Pen from Charlie Brown, but I will suggest things like hair gel, hairspray, leave-in conditioners, etc. All these things coat the hair, which is a great prevention trick! I have also known moms to use the SoCozy Boo! Lice Spray (Item #4). I have never personally tried this product, but I hear it does help!
Now that I have you itching, I will leave you with a few more tips! If you want to perform regular lice inspections on your family, a few things to remember: lice tend to hide behind the ears and at the nape. Don’t get dandruff confused with eggs. Dandruff will slide down an individual hair strand; eggs will not move. When separating the hair, use a comb and create clean lines. Last, but not least, if your child ends up getting head lice, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad parent or that your child is dirty! Don’t panic, there are OTC treatments, but always consult your doctor first!
Have a wonderful school year!
