There is something about South West, PA on the brink of fall. Some days are in the 50s and others are in the 80s. The leaves are beginning to change and the smell of fall approaching has been in the air since August, but it’s been in the 80s all week so, my brother and I had to take advantage of the last few days of summer.
Ohiopyle State Park isn’t far from where we live; it’s our little getaway spot close to home (also known to local Yinzers as HalPal… haha). A lot of people around the area spend most of their summers here playing the in water, hiking, fishing, kayaking and rafting, biking, and enjoying the local restaurants. But on a Wednesday afternoon in the middle of September, crowds are low. We started our adventure at our personal favorite, Cucumber Falls. It is a natural waterfall that you can climb behind. Anyone visiting needs to make sure they wear proper shoes; flip flops can make it quite difficult to climb around on the rocks if you’re into that kind of thing, but if you just want to do the stairs and take pictures from afar, you can do that as well. I must add that my brother loves to take pictures, so all photo-creds in this post go to him.
While at Cucumber Falls I found it to be a perfect opportunity to practice some yoga I have been learning at Mountain Yoga Shala, my brother captured this awesome picture but no laughing friends, I am still learning. MYS is located right near Ohiopyle in a little area called Chalk Hill. It’s a must visit; Ashley and I are both members there and we love it! More about that coming soon!
Once we got to the main part of the falls we went into the newly remodeled visitor’s center. This little area didn’t just have a nice view of the falls, but it was filled with education as well. At the beginning of the little walk through tour there are papers that you can get stamped through out. This would be a perfect place to visit with school aged children.
Before we continued on our journey, we had to stop at The Market for our favorite hand-dipped ice cream! I indulged in cotton candy flavor while Jay enjoyed salted caramel pretzel. After we grabbed our cone we headed on another hike. This time Jay wanted to take me to his favorite spot, not too far off the main trail. We spent some time on the rock by the river just talking and catching up; this was by far my favorite part about this trip.
Ohioipyle “HalPal” State Park is a must visit. If you are planning a stay I would recommend checking out Ohiopyle Vacation Rentals. You can read all about our stay here. There are also places to rent bikes, get involved in kayaking, eat delicious food, and benches to relax on.
We hope you will come and visit our favorite spot; we have a lot of memories here and we hope you make a lot as well. We would love to hear from you, so if you have been to Ohiopyle, share your favorite memory in the comments below!
xo,
Er and Jay
