I come from a crafty family; between my mom, my grandmother, and great aunts, I am bound to learn some sort of new crafting technique. Going to a place like Kirkland’s (which btw, I’m totally obsessed with this store; it’s one of my favs lol) is great, but it is easy to drop tons of money on pre-made decorations. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t like to spend a lot of money on things that are already “done” for me; I would much rather get my creative juices flowing and make it myself with the cheapest items available. So, the other day I went to the Dollar Tree and Hobby Lobby (for specific items) to gather supplies for my St Paddy’s Day decor!
I tagged along with Ashley on her Target run and stopped over in the dollar section to check out their St. Patrick’s day pieces. A few items were things that I had been looking for but they were $3 and $4 for something I knew I could find at the Dollar Tree two doors down.
The felt shamrock was the first thing to catch my eye in the ocean of green and gold. The coins that I am holding in the photo above were 30 for $1; at Target they were $3 for 20. I also got other things, like a sequined green bow tie, miniature green hats, tea towels, and a sparkly green hat that I would later use as part of my kitchen table centerpiece. In total, I spent $8 in the Dollar Tree and had everything I needed to begin my craft projects. It was time to head over to Hobby Lobby for deco mesh and a wreath form. Note: they do have foam wreath forms at the Dollar Tree, but if you’re using your wreath outside, I recommend not getting that kind; a gust of wind will take it off your door and it will break into pieces… RIP beautiful summer wreath. 🙁
When I went to Hobby Lobby, I had to pick up just a couple of things. I only needed a wreath form and deco mesh. I left with $27 worth of items that I probably didn’t need, but I was in the decorating spirit! I already had all of my little St. Paddy’s Day trinkets from the DT, but after Ashley and I decided to look around the store, we aimlessly ended up in the holiday section and I ended up purchasing a few “extras”. Ashley even got into the spirit of decorating and added a few items to her cart to decorate her classroom (she’s such a great teacher). You may notice the big white and red signs on the shelves. All the deco mesh and ribbon were 50% off and the St. Patrick’s Day stuff was marked down to 30% off. Score! I also purchased the 2nd largest wreath form they had, which was $4.99. The forms at Hobby Lobby are wayyyy cheaper than they are at Michael’s. I recommend getting all wreath supplies at HobLob.
This centerpiece cost me about $7 all together. The table runner was made by my grandmother; she is so talented, she made me one for every holiday and season; I absolutely love them! The sparkly hat came from the Dollar Tree; the candle holder was something I had already, so it cost me nothing to recreate (however, this was a past Dollar Tree purchase); I just poured some Epsom Salt in the bottom and placed the coins I purchased from DT in it. The lantern was also a gift from a friend that I had been using as a single centerpiece for a few weeks. The “not lucky, just very blessed” sign came from Hobby Lobby and was 30% off, regularly priced at $4.99. It was one of those “extra things” I didn’t need! You can see the two candle holders behind the sign, as well. I also had those already and just repeated with the Epsom salt and topped them off with the coins! The little sprinkled stuff around are glitter items I found at Hobby Lobby for 30% off of the regular price of $2.99. I didn’t really need those either, but I am a sucker for anything that sparkles. Not too shabby for a $7 center piece, eh?
You can see the progress I made on my next project. I like to make my own deco mesh wreath, but that’s a whole other post! I got the ribbon from Hobby Lobby. I will say that the Dollar Tree usually has ribbon (I just got some for my Easter projects), but the particular store that we were at didn’t, so I had to settle for 50% off of ribbon at HobLob (I believe it was originally $4.99). Anyways, I like to add a touch of flair to my wreath, so when I’m creating it, I add a little pop of ribbon on the form itself. The shamrock in the center, the bow tie in the top left corner, and the hat in the bottom left corner are all DT items. The little plastic hats came in a pack of 5 for $1 so I used them in other places in my house too! The glittery pieces are from the same pack as the pieces on my table, I also had enough left over so I gave them to my mom for her St. Patrick’s day decorations! The wreath cost me about $18 to make (that is taking into consideration that I used items from the same packaging to create different pieces). I have seen deco mesh wreaths go for $60+ on Etsy and other sites.
Mr. Moose hangs out on my fireplace so I needed to give him a hat to add some silliness to my decorating! Doesn’t he look so cute?!
My mom is always doing something cute at her home too! She also made Dollar Tree purchases and has added them throughout her home! My favorite is her St. Paddy’s day Tree! All of the items she has on her Tree came from the DT– including the green tulle “tree skirt” that wraps around the bottom; it is actually a novelty St. Patrick’s Day tutu! Creative huh?
So, no matter what you are celebrating, you can come up with some creative ways to use inexpensive items to spruce up your home! Have you done something similar? Let me know in the comments and share some pictures! I would love to see what you’ve come up with!
