Frizzy, broken, and just plain gross are all things that you could have used to describe my hair up until last Friday. I am a hairdresser for those who don’t know, and I am not always kind to my hair. Due to that fact, my hair has been a bit unruly; that is until my cousin Kasey, owner of Mirror Mirror Salon in Connellsville, PA, gave me a solution to my problems– a Brazilian Blowout.
You may have seen this service on the menu board at your favorite hair salon. You probably also noticed the cost of it too and it may have been a bit intimidating, but let me just tell you IT’S WORTH IT. I am not trained or certified in this service so I didn’t know a lot about it until I sat down with Kasey and talked about all the benefits. I feel like I can give an honest review based off of the knowledge I have in hair, but not knowing anything about the service itself. In case you are on the fence about the BB, I am going to tell you everything I have learned.
How it works:
You start with your stylist shampooing your hair to clarify and remove the impurities. They will not put conditioner on your hair after the shampoo so if your hair is as tangly as mine without conditioner, good luck brushing it out. Once it is brushed, your stylist will hand you a pair of fabulous glasses; these are simply for protection. They will then begin to apply the Brazilian product to your hair in sections. Fun fact: It doesn’t matter how long the product sits on your hair, so if your stylist is slow you don’t have to panic, your hair will not fall out! After the application, they will blow-dry the product into your hair followed by flat ironing each strand (up to 15 times per strand!) You will see some steam coming off of your hair and maybe a mild smell will cause your eyes to water, but no worries that is just the product (if you feel any discomfort, please let your stylist know immediately). After your hair is treated you then go back to the sink to have it washed and conditioned and head back to the chair for the final styling. Although, this time you don’t need to flat iron. It’s too good to be true, I know, but trust me it’s legit. For the next 12 weeks, you will be frizz free. It is heat-activated so it is best to add a little heat to it daily whether it be from the hairdryer, flat iron, or curling iron. I personally let it air dry the first time I shampooed and it looked great drying naturally. When it was almost completely dry, I hit it with a hairdryer and It was silky and shiny all over again.
So what exactly is it?
In a nutshell, it is a whole bunch of keratin and amino acids that fill in the “gaps” of your cuticle. It helps to mend split ends and everything! It is great for all hair types so if you deal with frizz, you’re a candidate. It won’t completely eliminate your natural curl (unless you ask your stylist to; it is customizable), but it will leave you frizz-free and shiny. Your blow dry time will be cut in half and if you are someone who does have curly hair, you will be able to dry your hair smooth if you choose. All of my blonde bombshells, you are allowed to get this too. I was under the impression before that platinum blondes, like Ashley, couldn’t receive this service; however, I was totally mistaken. In fact, the blowout will actually improve the health of color treated or highlighted hair. Another thing- you won’t lose volume; a lot of people fear that it will paste your hair to your scalp, but it won’t– which is a huge plus. It takes about 80 mins or so (depending on the speed of your stylist) and lasts about 12 weeks (if you listen to your stylist and maintain with the recommended products). There is an “express” option, as well, that takes about half the time to apply and only lasts a few weeks. In my opinion, just go for the whole thing; you won’t regret it. You can also color your hair the same day; however, your color will be done prior to receiving the blowout. The only downfall is you will have to spend twice as long in the chair, so I highly recommend bringing your stylist Starbucks or Dunkin’ for a big service like that, they will appreciate the gesture. 😉
People have definitely noticed a change in my hair– even my husband. Having a solution for frizzy hair in humid SWPA is a lifesaver. It was so nice not needing such a large amount cut to make my hair healthy again. Honestly, she did a light dusting just to make it even from prior breakage. This service would be perfect for anyone trying to grow their hair out and not sacrifice inches (unless necessary). If you have any further questions regarding the Brazilian Blowout, have a talk with your stylist or you can refer to the FAQ page on the Brazilian Blowout website.
There are only a few things I suggest post-blowout. The less you shampoo, the longer your blowout will last. I suggest using the dry shampoo Ashley talks about in this post. If you want a beautiful salon quality blowout after your treatment, I suggest using this tool. It has helped so many get a beautiful blowout every day! Lastly, listen to your stylist about what shampoos/conditioners they recommend you use.
If you are in need of a stylist and you live in the Connellsville, PA or surrounding areas, I highly recommend contacting Kasey or Blaire at Mirror Mirror Salon. They both do a fantastic job and are very reasonably priced.
