Picture it. Pennsylvania 1990. It was February; just a few short days before Valentine’s day. Ashley was born.
If I must state the obvious, Golden Girls is on in the background and I thought that intro was fitting for Ashley’s 30th birthday post. 😉
I could write a book on our friendship over the past 20 years, instead I am going to enlighten you on what it was like growing up as two best friends.
The 1990s were the decade that gave us Push Pops and Tiny Tune Adventures. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King (as well as other classic Disney films) made their way into our hearts. On sick days, we would stay home from school and watch Bob Barker host the Price is Right while eating Campbell’s alphabet soup. Our parents dressed us in questionable “tribal” prints displayed in neon colors and hair scrunchies (I am loving the scrunchie comeback btw…) Our Barbies and their shoes were scattered all over the floor and we hid our Furbies in the closet (because they kind of freaked us out). As we ended the decade and were getting a little older, Clarissa Explains It All and Saved by the Bell were on our TVs, we attended school dances that played the Macarena, and we listened to Spice Girls at every sleepover. We collected every Lisa Frank item we could get our hands on, and raised our Tamagotchi’s together. Mary-Kate and Ashley were a big deal and we sat and watched their movies over and over again while applying our Lip Smackers chapstick. Life was great – life was simple.
Transitioning into the ’00s is where things got a little interesting. Ashley’s first boy crush was Chris Trousdale from Dream Street and Princess Diaries was the hot movie. In the 6th grade, we would sit on the playground or in the classroom reading corner and sing Mandy Moore’s rendition of “Stupid Cupid” while our classmates sat around and listened – we thought we were soooo cool. We were in Mrs. Parsons 6th grade classroom when we learned what happened in on September 11.
We said goodbye to our radio mix tapes and hello to CD players. We spent our summers by the pool listening to N’sync and BSB. This was also the decade we were introduced to Rascal Flatts and we have been die hard fans ever since. When it was time to go school clothes shopping, Abercrombie was the hot brand but we never strayed away from the JCPenney classics.
High school went so fast; between cheerleading, school plays, and other activities it seems more like a blur now. In 2008 we graduated as LH Mustangs, forever falling in the alumni category. We ended the decade pursuing our dream jobs.
A new decade began; The 2010s brought such amazing memories. What we once dreamed as two girls laying poolside, was coming true. We settled in to great careers, married our wonderful husbands, and traveled the U.S. together – oh, and we started this totally awesome blog together. 😉 We are still in love with Rascal Flatts, we drink way too much coffee, and we are for all brands of clothing as long as it is our style.
So what will this new decade bring us? I am anxious to find out. Happy birthday my dearest and best friend, thanks for doing life with me. I love you.
