A few weeks ago, all of our lives were brought to a screeching halt in one way or another. Whether you had to stop working, continue working on location under different conditions, or work from home, we all had to adjust to a new normal. My classroom was moved into a small office space in my little home. I had to make some changes because up to this point, my office was used for entering grades on occasion, blogging, and filing our bills and other documents. It was not set up to be a virtual classroom or space I could work in effectively and without distractions. So, though I will be throwing in some helpful tips for teachers, this blog post will be beneficial to anyone who has put together or is working on a WFH office space.
1. Out with the Old
As much as I loved the decor and bookshelves in my office, it wasn’t an effective space for what I needed to do in here every day at the moment. I temporarily cleared off my shelves to make room for the things I knew I would need to access every day. For me, those are my binders containing the material I am currently teaching in my 2 classes and my textbooks! It wasn’t easy for me to get rid of all of the items I wanted there (and you can see I left a few), but I knew it was necessary to maximize the small space I had and increase my efficiency.
2. Make it a Happy Space.
Yes, it is extremely necessary to get rid of some of the things you don’t need, BUT be sure to keep some of the things that make you happy too! It’s ok to have flowers on your desk or that pineapple you love so much. You’re going to be returning to this spot over and over… and over again. So, make it a place that makes you happy too.
3. Embrace Technology.
You’re going to laugh at this one FOR SURE, but I love paper and pencil. I know you think I’m probably the LAST person that needs to “embrace” technology.. LOL, but as much as I absolutely love all of my technology, I like writing on paper. I’m used to checking my kids’ tests with a bright pink or blue BIC or Papermate pen. I quickly realized that to print out all of their assignments and tests would be a lot of wasted time and a lot of wasted paper and toner. So, I decided to embrace the technology I have. I use my iPad to write on their actual assignments and tests they’ve submitted to me virtually and return them with my “digital writing.” Sometimes, it’s hard to break away from routine, but if it’s going to help in the long run, it’s worth it! Whatever it is you’re doing, examine your daily routine and see if you can utilize the technology you have to increase efficiency.
4. Fill Your Cup.
And I’m not talking about alcohol either… lol. In the morning, I fill up my 20oz Yeti with coffee or tea and drink that while I’m getting my lessons and assignments up for the kids. I also fill up a 30oz Yeti with iced water and drink that throughout the day. Staying well-hydrated helps improve your mood, cognition, and sleep quality. The main reason I have my drinks close at-hand is so I can limit trips to the kitchen, which take time away from my productivity and usually cause me to snack unnecessarily. It’s perfectly fine and even necessary to sneak out to fill up your water every so often and stretch your legs!
5. Change Location Sometimes.
Need a scenery change? Me too! It’s OK if you need to move to a new location every so often. I sometimes move to the dining room table or a kitchen bar stool to knock out some work. Grab your laptop and give it a try when you’re feeling crappy or unproductive. A change in perspective might be all you need!
7. Comfy& Natural is OK.
I’ve seen a lot of posts about how you should get up every morning and do your hair and make-up the same as usual and as if you are still actually going to work. LOL, stop. If you’re into that, do you, girl. Sure, it’s OK every so often, but I’m spending a TON of hours sitting at my computer and I’m going to be comfortable doing that. I am sure to look presentable and dress appropriately (at least on top) for Zoom meetings, but on a regular day, give your skin and hair a break! We typically apply make-up to our faces and heat to our hair at least 6 times a week. You’ve been given the opportunity to improve your skin and hair like you’ve never been given before! I’ve been using face masks and moisturizers. Sometimes, when I’m feeling really wild, I throw on some tinted moisturizer and mascara too. 😉
I make it a point to go outside and walk 2-5 miles every day, so, my outfit is usually something I can use as “modified business casual” (lol) and workout wear (aka Lululemon Align leggings and a comfy shirt). Getting outside in the beautiful weather has been a sanity saver for me! Make it a point to do something active every day. It will help clear your mind too!
Now, use some of your time this holiday weekend to get your home office space ready for next week! Go be efficient! Happy Easter, friends.♡
xo,
Ash
